| The asteroid Apophis was previously predicted by NASA to have a 1 in 45,000 chance of hitting the Earth in 2015. As of recently, a 13 year old boy from Germany proved that NASA had its calculations wrong. The new chances are worse, so I guess the kid was the bearer of bad news. Here's a link to the article, and if you want more information about Apophis, check out NASA's website. New Information on Apophis | |

New Information on Apophis Thats pretty crazy... Nice call. Except its 2029, not 2015. Otherwise I'd pretend I cared. Just call Bruce Willis in 2028.

| Hmm my mistake. It used to be 2015 a while ago, but I haven't kept up with the exacts since I learned of it a long time ago. | |

| As soon as you know when the 2 objects (aka Earth and Apophis) are going to inhabit the same space at the same time, you can find out what side of the planet will be facing the asteroid. Sucks for all the aligators in Florida. All of a sudden, instead of worrying about the wetlands drying up, those scaley assholes will be swimming in a ton of water. | |

Right but the reason why they said the risk is greater is because it could hit a satellite... I'm gonna go ahead and guess the Pacific. It's bigger. It would be better if it just hit land. Like africa.

| Nah that sattelite thing was on its first trip close to the Earth. What I read was more of a worry about how Earth and its gravity affects its path for the second go around. I read that it will pass closer to Earth than any of our sattelites are in orbit so depending on how close it comes determines how close it will come on its second pass by. I'd rather it not hit anything, but if it has to hit something i'd prefer a sattelite than an ocean or continent. If it hits Africa with that kind of mass and force, then the amount of dust to fly into the atmosphere is exponentially bigger. At least the years are better now than they were when I read about it. The predictions used to say 2009 and 2015 so 2029 and 2036 are way better. | |

| Would the dust be black? Just kidding I'm not racist. I bet it would be, though. If it hit mexico, it would just be dirty =/ | |

| No the hugging blast radius would turn to glass. The heat produced on impact would melt the sand and turn it all into glass. And the sand/dust outside of the blast zone would be thrown into the air. Goodbye sun for who knows how many years. | |

| That would suck. Magnifying glass death to all. Nah there was supposedly already an asteroid collision in the Sahara some time way back in the day. Since it was so long ago the sandstorms have worn away the glass, but as much as there is still left after so many years means that there was a huuuuuge area of sand that was melted into glass. | |
